Raised on a farm near Watford, Ontario, Doug attended the University of Ottawa where he earned his Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree in 1978. He then moved closer to his roots to attend the University of Western Ontario where he earned his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1981. Doug was called to the Ontario bar in London in 1983. Doug joined the firm in 1988, joining Andy Szemenyei and the late Martin Bitz.
Doug acted as a Federal Crown Attorney for tax prosecutions conducted by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency from 1994-2003. He taught at the Bar Admission Course and the Skills and Professional Responsibility Course in London for many years and formerly sat on the Consent and Capacity Board for the provincial Ministry of Health.
Doug has been very active in the community over the years. He is a former President of Covent Garden Market, leading the Market through its demolition, rebuilding, and reopening. He is also a past president of the Canadian Club of London, and has been active in the local Optimists.
Doug has been served in many roles in politics at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels. In April 2008, he was elected President of the Liberal Party of Canada.
Doug is a member of Sunningdale Golf and Country Club and plays hockey in addition to golf. He also has an abiding interest in genealogy. He lives in London with his wife Laurie Lashbrook.
